Episode 10: The Power of the PTA

In which District 4 Parent Association Co-President, Toni Smith-Thompson explains the plans for PA/PTA elections this year, and Dr. Sanayi Beckles-Canton says, “Are you serious?"

Toni offered some great suggestions for parent engagement:

  • Ask parents to volunteer, rather than to run, appealing to parents wanting to help and build community, while recognizing the sacrifice that it takes to commit time in this difficult period.
  • Try to find a core group of parents to support those who take on any official roles.
  • Have multiple points of entry:
    • Multiple ways for parents to connect each month including hang-outs, workshops, tech sessions.
    • Ways to volunteer even if you can only volunteer one time such as setting up neighborhood-based hubs for parents to distribute science kits, paper packets, and other physical materials to fully remote families.
  • Creating line items to support struggling families in the PA budget.

Read the Chancellor's regulations on Parent Associations, Parent Teacher Associations, and President's Councils.
